My passion for education has been a career-long journey, beginning with clinical experience in mental health at Denver Health and Hospital Authority. In my first year of practice, I observed and learned the role of the fieldwork educator and supervisor. During this process, my mentor, also the department head, recognized my affinity for education and put me in charge of the fieldwork program. I participated in the Commission on Education, which at the time, had state-affiliated groups. Education became my passion.
I then accepted a part-time position teaching mental health and administration at an occupational therapy assistant (OTA) program in Denver. During that time, a new OTA program was developing in Denver and I became the founding program director. I remained in that position until the program voluntarily closed. During that tenure, I joined the Roster of Accreditation Evaluators (RAE).
I then returned to the clinic where I supervised fieldwork students and was invited to sit on the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). My term with ACOTE finalized in 2014; I remained on the RAE. When I had the opportunity to return to education, I joined another developing program as the academic fieldwork coordinator, then moved into the program director position. I had the opportunity to supervise a doctoral student who focused her capstone on education. I also testified on the rigor of OTA education to the Colorado legislature in support of OTA licensure in Colorado. In retirement, I remain involved in the profession and support my love of OT/OTA education by a continued role on the RAE, as a mentor in the New Educator Mentorship Program (NEMP) of the Academic Education Special Interest Section (AESIS), as professional development chair of my state association, and as an advisory board member in my former program.
